Playing In Paradise Spring Colour Challenge: Butterfly Inspired

I’m hosting a colour challenge at Scrapbooker’s Paradise today, check it out!

I was inspired by this photo, found on Pinterest (click image to view source):

Using Photoshop it was easy to select colours from the butterfly to use for a colour palette. I almost never use yellow so that was the hardest colour for me to incorporate.

I’m really into collage look projects right now so I went for a collage effect with this card and I love how it turned out – even with the yellow. First I used Distress Stain in Tumbled Glass to streak up my background, and then I stamped a text stamp over that. Distress Stain dries really quickly!

I don’t have any washi tape, even though everyone keeps saying it’s so hot right now, so I made my own using tissue tape. I stuck a strip on a craft mat and inked it with yellow alcohol ink. I’m sure Distress Stain would work as well, and probably even dye ink if you are willing to heat set it so it doesn’t smear. Then I layered a few more details, added a sentiment and a bird, and some butterflies for my touch of green. This kind of card feels a lot like making art!

One last tip: when you are creating using a colour challenge, I like to recommend the “gallon, quart, pint” method. Using colours in different quantities makes it easier to create a pleasing combination of colours. Of course, in Canada we use the “gallon, litre, millilitre” method. (That doesn’t even look right, does it? I guess we still use Imperial measurements for some things!)

Now I’m inviting you to join this challenge; explore the colours and see what you come up with. Take a look at the rest of the design team’s projects on the Scrapbooker’s Paradise blog and I bet you’ll find something to inspire you!

  1. I think that was it for me – I could do any 3 of the colours, but tucking the fourth in was where I kept stumbling! Still, I loved the stretch of this challenge (afterwards, lol) and that inspiration photo is simply gorgeous! I love your faux-washi (must try that!) and the fun collection of embellies!
