This weekend was epic for me. Not only did I take my first art workshop in nearly twelve years, but I also participated in my first Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) show, AND I won an award! Three milestones in one weekend!

The show, titled “Peace Squared,” was a venue for members of the Peace River Chapter of the FCA, and I was delighted to both join the chapter and have two pieces accepted into the show. I have previously entered paintings into FCA shows but had never had any paintings accepted until now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the opening on Friday night, driving through freezing rain early Saturday morning to take part in the two-day workshop in fluid acrylic with Sharon Lynn Williams. As I was setting up my paints, artist Sandy Troudt (who won second; I love her vibrant paintings) came over and immediately congratulated me on winning third place in the show! Shortly after I met the first place winner, artist Patricia Peters (stunning mixed media!), and was given the folder containing a certificate documenting my award, a catalogue of the show and a cheque. I hadn’t even known there would be prizes in this show!

I can’t tell you how much it means to me to have had one of my paintings chosen for an award. Over the years I have entered my art in many juried shows and have in eighteen years never seen any recognition higher than an honourable mention (and that only twice). While I have been willing to accept that one does not need to receive commendation from their peers to be a successful artist, and have learned not to strive for the praise of others, receiving this award has been so encouraging!

It’s truly a validation of my direction as an artist and a confirmation that I can continue to stride ahead confidently, having something original and genuine to contribute.

My winning painting, “Fragrant” is full of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed every stroke that went into this painting as I explored colour and line and let the paint flow, and I believe it is that authentic joy that has given my paintings a new voice over the last year.

I have lots to say about the workshop that kept my hands busy this weekend, but I’ll save that for another post. My site hasn’t been running right and I need to do some troubleshooting.

I also want to say, “Thank you!” It means so much to me to hear your supportive comments. Some of you have been friends and followers for many years and I wish I could tell you how much it means to have you cheering me on and believing in me. Once upon a time, being an artist was a wish that seemed as far away as the stars. Today I know it’s as simple as choosing that path and following where it leads. It’s a winding and thoroughly scenic journey!
